Survey Design 5: Question Types

It is very important to begin with the end in mind where you consider the type of questions that will need to be answered and the type of reports that will be used. Starting there will determine the data that needs to be collected, which will then shape this Survey’s design.

To add a new question, drag and drop the question type to the desired Section area.

All question types include the following settings:

  • Question … This is the question text to be presented to the respondent.
  • Instructions (optional) … Additional instructions to help the user understand how to answer the question. These appear above the question. These can be displayed in plain text, or HTML. If you select HTML, click HTML Editor to display all formatting options.
  • Mobile Header (optional) … Since each question appears on a separate page in the mobile apps, this provides a header that only appears in the mobile apps.
  • Question Settings
    • Required … requires a response to this question
    • Comments … allows comments to be added
    • Comments Required … requires comments to be added
    • Randomize question position … If ‘Allow question randomization’ is enabled for the survey section, this determines whether to allow the question to be presented in a random order (on), or opt out of the randomization (off).
  • Visibility Settings
    • Role-Based Visibility … options to hide/display the question, depending on what role(s) were selected to complete the survey.
      • Only show when the taker is in … this option becomes available if more than one Role was selected when deciding who can take this survey.
      • Only show when the target is in … this option depends upon the target selection for each Section. Select one or more Roles from the drop down to limit who will be the subject of the question.
    • Question-Based Visibility … options to hide/display the question, depending on responses to other questions.
      • Note: The only question types supported at this time to control visibility of other questions are: Multiple Choice, Dropdown, and Matrix Rating (when rating Items, not people). Also included in this feature are Pre-Questions.
      • Manage Settings … turn on ‘Only present this question to the user when…’ to then set the options below.
      • The value from the following…
        • Question … The only questions that will appear are those that are qualified for visibility (Dropdown, Multiple-Choice, Matrix Ratings) AND those that appear before the question in the survey. Select one.
        • Operator … select either ‘Equals’, ‘Doesn’t Equal’, ‘Is Answered (not empty)’ or ‘Is Not Answered (empty)’.
        • Response … select one or more.
      • Once you’ve saved some question-based visibility settings, you can use the Copy, Paste or Delete icons to re-use the same settings on other questions.
  • Overlay Settings … Overlay Settings allow survey administrators to override certain properties. Properties that may be available (depending on the question type):
    • Allow Question to be Hidden
    • Allow Prompt Override
    • Allow Instruction Override
    • Allow Response Label Override
    • Allow Ratings to be Hidden
    • Allow Rating Label Override
  • Data … Responses to questions are stored as evaluations, which require variable names and types. See Variable Naming Conventions for recommendations and guidance setting variable names and types.

In addition to the settings above, each question type has its own specific options:
