Add New Goal (Advanced)

On the Goals page, click the “Add New Goal” tab. In the dropdown that appears, select Add New Goal (advanced). This opens a dialogue box in which you can create a new Goal, or you can import an existing Goal.

To create a new goal

    • Provide a Goal name.
    • Enter a description (maybe it’s your motivation to achieve this Goal).
    • “What would you like to record?” … select one:
      • Units (or decimal places)
      • Unit label (e.g. pounds, inches, etc)
      • Target goal (value)
      • Starting value (optional) … if no value is entered here, the first entry recorded for the Goal will be used as the starting value (or baseline value)
      • Direction… identify whether Lower or Higher values are better.
      • Number … additional details:
      • Time
      • Other
    • “What type of goal is this?” … or, how do you anticipate progress will take place? This response is factored into the progress calculation, and can help your perception of how you’re doing along the way. Select one:
      • Consistent improvement
      • Easy to Hard … easier at first / more difficult towards the end
      • Hard to Easy … more difficult at first / easier towards the end
    • When do you aim to achieve this goal? Select a target date.
    • (Optional) You can share your Goal with your peers by checking “Make your Goal public?” (strike up a little friendly competition with peers and let your supervisors know what you’re up to).
    • Click “Create New Goal”.

To import an existing Goal (i.e. one that someone else has created and made “public”)…

    • Click “Import Goal”.
    • Select a Goal. The creator and description will be displayed.
    • The existing name will be displayed, but you can change it at this point.
    • When do you aim to achieve this goal? Select a target date.
    • (Optional) You can share your Goal with your peers by checking “Make your Goal public?”
    • Click “Import”.

Creating an Action Plan (optional)

The next step is to build out your action plan by adding up to 10 Commitments. These commitments do not affect the displayed progress and are not required when setting a Goal, but can be useful to identify behaviors or steps to help guide your efforts. Once you’ve created/imported a Goal, select “Add New Commitment”…

    • Give it a name
    • Under ‘What would you like to record?’, select:
  • Number
        • Units (or decimal places)
        • Enter a Target value for this commitment.
        • Direction … identify whether Lower or Higher values are better.
        • Will you think of this as a Daily or Weekly process? Either way, you’ll record actions taken day to day, but the progress can be displayed in daily or weekly increments.
          • If Weekly, should it be displayed as a Total or Average number?
          • For example, you may want to complete 1000 pushups in a week, as opposed to 200 per day.
        • When do you aim to achieve this commitment? Select a target date.
      • 3 point Rating Scale … when recording progress, you’ll select from ‘smiley’ face icons (green/yes, gray/somewhat, red/no)
        • When do you aim to achieve this commitment? Select a target date.

  • Time
      • Target time in units (specify hours, minutes, seconds).
      • Enter a Target value for this commitment.
      • Direction: identify whether Lower or Higher values are better.
      • Will you think of this as a Daily or Weekly process? Either way, you’ll record actions taken day to day, but the progress can be displayed in daily or weekly increments.
        • If Weekly, should it be displayed as a Total or Average number?
        • For example, you may want to average an hour of reading per day over the course of a week, as opposed to trying to read one hour every day that week.
      • When do you aim to achieve this commitment? Select a target date.
    • Yes or No … when recording progress, you’ll record a green check or red X
      • Select a number from 1 to 7 to identify the target daily or weekly goal.
      • For example, you may want to complete five total workouts in a week, or two workouts per day.
      • Will you think of this as a Daily or Weekly process? Either way, you’ll record actions taken day to day, but the progress can be displayed in daily or weekly increments.
      • When do you aim to achieve this commitment? Select a target date.
  • (Optional) You can link an Commitment to another of your Commitments, which then streamlines the process of recording progress… when you record progress on this single Commitment, it reflects progress on all linked Goals:
    • Click “Link Existing”.
    • Select a Goal from the top drop down
    • Select an Commitment from the bottom drop down
    • Click “Link Goal Action”.
    • The Commitment should now be a part of this Goal.
  • Click “Save Goal Action”
  • Repeat for additional Commitments, up to 10.

You can return to the main My Goals page from any of the Goals pages by clicking on Goals towards the top of the page, to the right of your name.
