Recording Observations on a Mobile Device (app)

To record a Behavioral Observation, begin by tapping the Eye icon at the very left of the icon bar.

  1. You can either tap on the Who button to add a person (or multiple people), or you can tap on the Where button to add the location/event where the Observation took place. The order does not matter. You can easily search for people if needed.
  2. Once you have indicated the Where portion of the Observation, you will then be able to add the behavior (or action) from a list.
    • This list is divided into …
      • Negative behaviors, accessed by pressing the red minus sign,
      • Neutral behaviors, accessed by pressing the gray dot,
      • Positive behaviors, accessed by pressing the green plus sign, and
      • Actions, accessed by pressing the blue plus sign.
    • Once you are in the behaviors menu, you can quickly toggle between behaviors.
    • While in the behaviors menu, you can also add comments to further describe your observation.
      • Note that comments are not always available for every behavior depending on how your administrator set up the behavior.
    • If selecting an action, you can enter a number (e.g. for the number of repetitions), and enter a comment, if space is made available.
    • A lock icon will appear on the Where button once an event is selected, and another one on the Who button once at least 1 target is selected.
      • You can tap the lock icon by the event, to “lock” in the event and save a step when observing the same event for a long period of time.
      • You can tap the lock icon by the target(s), to “lock” in the target(s), and save a step when observing the same target(s) for a long period of time.
      • You can lock both the event and target(s), and save a couple steps if observing the same target(s) in a single event.
  3. Our push notification feature allows you to notify the subject that you’ve observed this behavior. On the Who button, tap the bell icon and confirm you want to notify them. The target will receive a notification and be able to view the behavior and associated comment.
  4. Back at the main Observations screen, you can also tap on the camera icon at the top-right of the screen. This will allow you to attach a photo of the behavior you observed for additional clarification or context.
  5. Once you have filled out the required fields (Where, Who, the behavior), simply tap the Post button near the bottom of the screen. The entire process should take, on average, 10 seconds.
  6. You can view a recorded Observation by clicking on the history icon on the left, above the Where and Who buttons (to edit a recorded Observation, you must sign in to GideonSoft via the web).
