A Variable is a numerical or text value that can change over time, and can be affected by its context. Variables are also created when designing a Survey, Observation event or Spreadsheet. Once those input sources are designed, Variable Manager is used to prepare more advanced variables (such as an average or sum of selected input variables) for analysis or reporting.
There are two main kinds of variables you can create in Variable Manager:
- Score Variable … this uses a transformation or calculation of some kind, and selected input variables, to generate a single numerical or time value (e.g. an average of instructor ratings, a count of negative behavior observations, or a ranking based on an existing score variable)
- Person Variable … this results in a single text or numerical value that provides additional information about a user, such as demographic data (e.g. Age, Hometown, Jersey number)
Variables can be created in multiple ways in Variable Manager:
- By manually creating one at a time. See Variable Manager (Manually Creating a Person Variable) and Variable Manager (Manually Creating a Score Variable).
- By manually importing one at a time from another Instance. See Variable Manager (Importing a Variable).
- By importing one or more via a spreadsheet. See Variable Manager (Importing a Variable).
GideonSoft strongly recommends using a logical and consistent naming convention for variables. See Variable Naming Conventions for a full explanation.
Variables can also be removed one at a time by clicking the X by the target variable, or multiple variables can be removed by checking the box next to the target items and then red ‘Remove Selected’ button at the bottom left.
