Recording Observations on a Mobile Device (app)

To record a Behavioral Observation, tap Observations (the eye icon) at the bottom of the app. The process of capturing behavioral observations in GideonSoft was designed to be brief, and requires only three things:

  • Where did you observe the behavior? (the “Event” or context)
  • Who are you observing? (one or more people)
  • What did you observe? (the behavior)

Where?

Start here to select an event/context in which the Observation took place.

  • Pre-Question … (optional) You may then be prompted to respond to a pre-question (tag). These can be used to differentiate between events that occur more than once.
  • Lock … (optional) After selecting an Event, you can lock it in to quickly record multiple observations in the same Event. By tapping the event lock icon, it will be pre-selected for the next observation.

Who?

Then select Who you are observing. You can easily search for people if needed.

  • Unlinked vs. Primary / Secondary … You must select the ‘mode’ before selecting a person.
    • Unlinked … (default) This simply means you’re recording the same behavior for the selected person(s).
    • Primary / Secondary … When selecting more than one person, this refers to the interaction between them, identifying which individual(s) are primary, and which are secondary; your selections will be grouped accordingly as you select people.
  • Lock … (optional) After selecting one or more people, a lock icon will appear on the Who button. To save a step when observing the same subject(s) in a single event, you can ‘lock’ both the target(s).
  • Notification … (optional) Once you’ve selected at least one person (or Lineup), you’ll have the option of notifying the subject(s) of your observation. Tap the bell icon and confirm. Once you post the observation, the notification will be sent.

What?

Select a behavior type to see available behaviors. There are multiple types available for use, depending on how your organization has configured GideonSoft.

  • Negative behaviors (red button)
  • Neutral behaviors (gray button)
  • Positive behaviors (green button)
  • Actions (blue button) … This observation type is different from a behavior. It enables an instructor to quickly capture the number of times an action occurred (e.g. how many pushups a candidate does; or, how many pitches were thrown), and allows a running total of an action to be tallied.

Additional Options

  • You can lock both the selected Event and individual(s), and save a couple steps if observing the same person(s) in a single event.
  • Tags and Comments … After selecting a behavior or action, you may have some additional options available, such as selecting a tag, or adding comments. If selecting an action, you can enter a number (e.g. for the number of repetitions), and enter a comment, if space is made available.
  • (Optional) Attach an image … At the top of the main Observations screen, you can tap the camera icon, and attach an image of the behavior you observed for additional clarification or context.

Post!

Once you have filled out the required fields (Where, Who, What), tap the Post! button near the bottom of the screen. The entire process should take, on average, 10 seconds.

Observation History

You can view your recorded observation history by tapping the history icon at the top of the screen. To edit a recorded observation, you must sign in to GideonSoft via the web. You are able to delete a recorded observation.
